Dwight School's music department is a hub of activity throughout the school day, with a variety of musical activities during lunchtimes and after school. In addition to the practical music-making of the day-to-day curriculum, the Dwight London Music Conservatory Programme provides students with the opportunity to take individual music lessons and ensemble coaching in order to develop their musical talents, skills and knowledge.
Students are taught by teachers from prestigious institutions such as The Royal College of Music, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, The Guildhall School of Music & Drama and The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, as well as musicians performing in well established jazz ensembles, orchestras, choirs and rock bands.
Offering a wide variety of musical styles, The Conservatory encourages students to actively participate in musical ensembles, representing our school in concerts, competitions and festivals. One of the most popular musical occasions for our students is the Dwight Global concert in Carnegie Hall, New York.
We currently offer instrumental tuition in piano, voice, violin, classical guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, drum kit & percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, theory and composition. Other instruments may be available upon request.
The programme runs during the week and also on Saturdays, allowing the lessons to be scheduled around the students' academic requirements. The Saturday Conservatory programme is also open to children attending other schools, fostering links with our local community.
Conservatory Saturdays are located at our Jubilee building on Friern Barnet Lane and are open on Saturdays from 9am – 1pm. Apart from standard one to one lessons, we arrange tuition in small groups and help and facilitate specialist instruction upon request.
We also look forward to running bands and ensembles which are free of charge for Dwight students registered for individual music lessons with our Conservatory, all other participants pay a small administration fee of £50 per term. Please refer to the registration form below for further details.
Additionally, the Dwight Conservatory faculty offer specialised ensemble coaching after school at no extra cost. Our most popular ensembles are the jazz band, the rock band, the school choir, a chamber group, a folk band and an after school music theory club. There are also several student-initiated and led bands who rehearse mostly during lunchtime.
