Forest School

Forest School is an inspirational process, that offers ALL learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment.

At Dwight we place a strong emphasis on personalised learning and student agency. Our Forest School will complement this value as children will be encouraged to initiate their own learning by being involved in experiences that motivate them and inspire them to find their own spark of genius.

Aims of Forest School include:

  • Develop inquiring, knowledgeable, caring children who are motivated to have an impact on our global and local communities.
  • Enabling children to experience the outdoors on a regular and long term basis.
  • Offering a holistic approach to learning and development.
  • Encouraging collaboration, teamwork, awareness of self and others through the use of games and experiences.
  • Building children’s confidence and self-esteem.
  • Access to activities that involve an element of risk but that benefit learners.
  • Developing an appreciation of the natural world with the aim of motivating learners to want to protect it.
  • Extending learning into the outdoors as well as bringing skills that can be transferred back to the classroom.
  • Empowering children to take appropriate risks through use of tools or being around a fire.
