Upper School News
Well we certainly had a lot of fun with the snow and ice at school this week and I was impressed with the staff and students for pushing on to keep the learning going in school. We finally succumbed to the prevailing winds and closed today but our intrepid student reporters still made their press deadlines on news from the week. We we will start this week with sport!
From our sports correspondent - Kamran
On Friday, 23rd February M1-M3 played a football game against Northbridge House School. Our football team coach this year is Mr. Williams. Our football game was a 7-aside game and we played at home at the Dwight sports ground. The final score was 8-1 to Dwight and the scorers of the game were Kamran (2,) Veco (3), William (2), and Drake (1). This was one of Dwight best games this season. We would like to thank Mr. Williams for being a great coach this year for us. He motivated us when we were down and applauded us when we did well. He is one of the best football coaches in the whole of Dwight and hopefully he can coach us again next year. Mr. Williams commented 'A dominant performance by Dwight who showed their superiority with a big win. Some nice football played on a very cold afternoon. Man of the match was Veco who scored a hat trick and impressed in midfield. The team played some really nice pass and move football. A doff of the cap to Bodhi who made a great save from a penalty in the second half'.
Ahaan continues his swimming success in Kenya
Ahaan, our competitive swimmer in M3, continued his success at national levels on a recent trip to Kenya. We are proud to report that Ahaan won gold in the 1500m, 200m, and 100m freestyle, silver in the 400m freestyle and a bronze in the 50m freestyle. He has been added to a selection list for Team Kenya to represent them internationally and we wish him all the very best with his passion for the pool and open water swimming.

The tutor group of Studio Ghibli (Artists) felt that there was a problem in the school cafeteria and that was the use of polystyrene plates. We know these plates are damaging to our natural environment and is a barrier in our quest for the Upper School to achieve Green Flag status. Studio Ghibli created a petition to stop using these plates and we were able to get over 120 community signatures. We took this petition to Mr. Atkinson and he was able to pass it to the cafeteria and we met with the catering management. After a week of waiting we finally got the news that the petition was a success. Now the cafeteria uses recyclable plates and has a special recycle bin for them. We won't stop there, the next petition will be about getting rid of the plastic utensils so we can get one step closer at becoming a more eco-friendly school!
Upper school welcomes Year 5 for a transition day!

On Monday one group of Year 5 students from the Lower School came to get a taste of what it's like in the Upper School! They had the chance to be in class with the M1s throughout the day, and experience being in new classes such as Science and Spanish, as well as having a great time with the older students in class, break and lunch.
We loved having them with us and we hope to see them again soon! We are excited to announce that this coming Monday we will be visited by another group of Year 5 students, we hope it will be as much fun and useful for them too!
DWIGHT AT THE OWLYPIA COMPETITION

At the Upper school this week Finn (M1), Sebastian, Luke, Nick (M5) and Teodor (DP1) have taking part in the Owlypia competition amongst over 960 students from 28 countries.
Owlypia is a global online competition inspired by The Intellectuals' Challenge (TIC) at University of Cambridge. It aims to inspire the intellectual curiosity in young minds around the world.
Our students had to choose a field subject among Science & Technology, Social Sciences, Art & Design, Literature & Culture and Economics & Business. They prepared themselves by watching specific films and lectures on Youtube, reading books and articles as well as discussing in groups conceptual and debatable questions on the topic Failure, road to success.
The competition was quite intense since they had to answer 100 questions mainly on their chosen subject as well as the others in a limited period of time. Our students were very pleased with the challenge - content and format. They enjoyed expanding their knowledge and having the opportunity to take part in stimulating discussions with other students at Dwight.
On Monday the final results will be announced. We wish our Owlypia 2018 team all the best and hope more students will feel inspired and take the challenge next year!
Mandarin Trip
Seventeen students enjoyed a trip to the British Museum on Monday to visit the Chinese Gallery on display there. From iconic Ming dynasty blue-and-white porcelain to delicate handscrolls, from magnificent Tang dynasty tomb figurines to modern works of art, the displays feature the richness of art and material culture in China, including painting, prints, jade, bronze, lacquer and ceramics.
After they finished their tour of the Museum, they headed to China Town to practice their speaking and chopstick skills over a fabulous Chinese feast.
Halcyon Model United Nations
This week our students have participated in the 5th Model United Nations conference at Halcyon London International school The theme for this year's conference was Conflict and Conservation. Dwight students have been very active in the debate with several of our students participating in the Security Council. Our very own Teodor was also chosen to chair this council which is a great honour.
Wings of Hope (WOHAA) Charity Concert

We are pleased to announce there will be a concert on Tuesday, 6th March. The concert itself starts at 7.00pm, but if you would like to come early and eat some great food, the hall will be open from 6.30pm. This is a charity concert and all profits from this will go to WOHAA, a student charity which supports children's education in India and Malawi. There will also be a mini event called Pass the Hat between each performance, there will be a goblet passed around, and for any performers who you liked, you can put in candy which we sell for 50p! If you would like to come, please use our online reservation here. There is an entrance fee of £3, which you pay at the door, but there will be drinks and Japanese food and snacks included in the entrance fee! We hope to see you all there!
The WOHAA charity really is inspiring our D1 students to fundraise and last Monday the D1 group held a bake sale in the café to keep the momentum going. This Sunday Mrs. Boyle is taking a D1 group to a service event in London and I'm sure they will continue to support this worthy cause.
Art Exhibition moved to Monday at 4.00pm
Due to poor weather conditions on Friday, the D2 Art Exhibition has been postponed to Monday, 5th March at the earlier time of 4pm.
The Diploma 2 students will be exhibiting works of art about the following subjects:
Hitomi Nara - Social polarisation and the Japanese culture
Keir Miley - Effects of the media on society
Keren Strassburg - Traditions of different cultures and environmental issues
We will also hear live music from the choir and band who performed last month at Carnegie Hall in New York. If you were unable to see them perform in New York, this is your chance!
Next Week's Events
M3 & M4 - National Enterprise Day
Next Friday 9th March, M3 and M4 students will be off timetable and taking part in the National Enterprise Day. The award winning Ryman National Enterprise Challenge is the UK's leading Enterprise and Employability competition, having been delivered to over 140,000 young people since 2013. Delivered over the course of a full school day, the challenge aims to develop the key employability skills needed for the world of work, including teamwork, communication and leadership.
Netball fixtures on Monday 5th (U15) and Friday 9th March (U13)
Good luck to the netball teams who compete next week in two inter-school fixtures.
DPA Quiz Night Appreciation
Many thanks to all the DPA who organised a super Quiz Night last Saturday. The evening raised £647 for our Spark Tank initiative and everyone enjoyed themselves. A special thanks to Mano Griffiths for setting us tough questions, Kate Hicks Beech and her team for the organisation and to Robby Sahni for the fabulous spicy food.
