Learning in the Lower School

Year 6 were visited by a local Councillor on Wednesday. Councillor Laurie Williams from Barnet Council helped the students to understand the process that he went through to become a councillor. The students in Year 6 are working on their Unit of Inquiry about Governance and they were intrigued to hear about how councils work, how decisions are made and how committees are formed to help the decision-making process. The students asked some insightful questions. Councillor Williams was impressed by their enthusiasm, knowledge and range of questions.

Some children from Reception have been identifying emotions this week. They have been drawing faces that display different emotions and trying to write the sounds that are in such words as angry, happy and sad.

Year 5 have made some great 3D models of the solar system this week, as part of their Unit of Inquiry. The Year 5 teachers were so pleased that they immediately displayed them in the main corridor.

Our footballers played against Hereward House School on Tuesday and lost a tight game 2:0. They play again on Wednesday, 27th January and we wish them well.

Next week we are launching a new initiative called our “Hour of Code” week. The children from all classes will be given specific ICT activities that will focus on coding skills. They have also had an exciting assembly from the Digital Leaders telling us all about coding and setting a coding competition!

On Thursday we were visited by fourteen teachers from state schools in Holland. They came to see a successful international school, and they particularly focused on how we met the needs of our students and continued to support and challenge them. They were exceptionally complimentary about the school and particularly the teaching staff and students they met.

Clubs
Lower School Clubs continued this week. I was lucky enough to drop in on a club that Arun, an M1 student from the Upper School is leading. He is helping the students with computer coding through this club.

During Performance Club the auditions for the main roles in our play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory took place. Well done to everyone that auditioned, the standard was very high. Talia will be playing the role of Willy Wonka, with Romilly playing the role of Charlie.

In chess club this week I played a game against Ella. It is great to see the students thinking about chess moves and what the benefits or potential looses could be. Ella was very good and we managed to agree to a draw!
