Learning in the Lower School

Image
Welcome back - I hope you had a good break and that you are enjoying the April sun!  In the last few hours of last term we hosted a Lower School Interhouse Dance Competition that had been part of the PE curriculum. It was great to see teamwork, collaboration and lots of fun in an array of cool dance moves!

Lower School Clubs Start Next Week

We again have a wide variety including games, sports, fitness crafts, subjects and hobbies. The students are aware of what clubs they are in. The expectation is for them to commit to the clubs and to try out something with a member of staff that they are not so familiar with.

Please click here to view the list of students and their clubs (please note that each day is under a different tab).

Life in the Lodge

Our Lodge building is often full of vibrancy and excitement. This week was no different. In Kindergarten and Reception we welcomed five new members into the class. The five new members were ducks! The ducks are part of their unit on life cycles. The ducks hatched this week in the classroom. I know that the students have given them cool names such as Quack-Quack, Chicky, Diasy Duck Duck Goose, Quacky and  Baby Duck. Throughout the week they will be looking after the ducks and learning more about them.

In Year 1 the students got an opportunity to take part in some outdoor activities. They learned about about being safe outdoors. They worked together making artwork from natural resources and they really liked making dens with Miss Tomlin too. Year 1 went to Kew Gardens on Tuesday to look at plant life (as part of their unit on Living Things) and ecosystems too. They had a great time. They enjoyed the good weather and learned a lot about plant life, the amazing variety of plants and what they need.

Year 6 and M1 Combined Trip

Throughout the academic year, Year 6 students have taken part in many transition activities that ensure they are ready to transition to the Upper School and become M1 students. On Friday both M1 and Year 6 got together and visited the British Museum in London. The trip really helped them get to know one another.

Super Question and Language of the Week

This week our Super Question was: What was combined together in the recent Commonwealth Games?  We also had a new Language of the week which was Indonesian (Selamat Pagi) and our Thunk of the week, which is a question to make your brain go ouch  was: What lesson in school would be the tastiest?

Curriculum Overviews

This terms curriculum overviews are now online, to view Kindergarten and Reception please click here. For Years 1 to 6, please click here.

Finally I'm looking forward to viewing the Personal Projects that the IB Middle Years students have been working on. IBMYP projects are student-centred and age-appropriate, and they enable students to engage in practical explorations through a cycle of inquiry, action and reflection. This allows students to go into great depth on one personal area of interest and the exhibition always produces an array of outcomes. The M5 students will be sharing their projects on Monday evening from 6.30pm in Jubilee Hall (6, Friern Barnet Lane N11 3LX). I hope to see some of you there.

Kind regards

Matt Parkin

Lower School Principal
