Lower School Newsletter

Learning in the Lower School

Image
-Assembly
This week was rounded off with a lovely assembly from our youngest children in the Kindergarten and Reception classes. The themes for their assembly were Change and Life Cycles. They enjoyed sharing their learning in front of a very supportive audience of parents,  students and staff. They shared their joy of books by re-enacting the story of the The Very Hungry Caterpillar with songs and costumes.

They also used a TV show format to demonstrate integrity and being principled - well done to everyone in the Early Years - we really enjoyed sharing your learning!
Spark Tank
On Tuesday Years 3, 4, 5, and 6 were treated to an assembly about Spark Tank - Mr. Turner from the Upper School explained that the Spark Tank is an idea based on the show Dragon's Den where students can share their ideas that can help the world be a better place and their ideas could be backed financially, supported and marketed by the Spark Tank experts. Spark Tank started in Dwight New York, here are some videos of their students ideas.
We will be encouraging our students to think through some of their big ideas, who knows they could change the world.
Reading with Molly
On Thursday we are trying out a Reading with Molly session in the library. Molly is a pet dog who lives locally and belongs to a member of staff. You may remember her from last years Summer Fair where she won the category for best female dog. Molly will be based in the library for an hour and we will be encouraging students to read to her. There is a lot of evidence surrounding how dogs can help students develop such skills as empathy, care and tolerance. The students in The Lodge will be the first group to try this out.  You can see Molly in the photos above.

Summer Fair

This week the DPA met staff to discuss the Summer Fair, which will be held on Saturday, 23rd June at the sports field from 11am-2pm.

There will be a non-uniform day in the Lower School on Friday, 22nd June in exchange for items that will be sold at the summer fair such as dvds books etc. Look out for more information in the upcoming weeks.

Good Luck Year 6
They fly to sunny New York next week with Mrs. Becci, Ms. Dunaway and Mrs. Hornshaw, and we wish them well. They are hoping to visit the UN, the Empire State Building, Chinatown and many other great Manhattan venues.

Super Question and Language of the Week

Who is the Secretary of State for Education - Damian Hinds was the correct answer given by Elisa in Year 4.

Next week we have asked what the titles are for the soon to be married couple Prince Harry and Megan Markle?

Have a great weekend

Lower School Principal

Reminders and Key Dates

Reminders

  • Uniform reminder: A reminder that students who have shoulder-length hair should have it either tied back or away from their face using a headband. School shoes should be black, if your child is wearing sports shoes they need to be black all over, without a predominate, different-coloured logo. For health and safety reasons, we also ask that students do not wear open toed shoes. We want to remind all parents that we expect all healthy students to attend school, all of the time. If time is required away from school for religious or holiday purposes they must ask permission from the Lower School Principal mparkin@dwightlondon.org.
  • We want to remind all parents that as the temperatures are getting higher we recommend wearing hats and applying sunscreen to your child/ren during any hot spells.
