Learning in the Lower School

Swimming Celebration
On Saturday, five Dwight students represented the school at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) National Swimming Championships at the London Aquatic Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Our swimmers all swam extremely well, taking home two medals! Well done to Josh H on this gold medal for the Year 4 Boys Freestyle Relay and Marika J for her silver medal in the Year 5 Girls Freestyle Relay. Sterre B finished 6th in her individual breaststroke event and Ben D and Alexander J also finished 6th and 7th in their relay races. Thanks to Mr. Williams and the parents and staff who supported the swimmers. We are very proud of their fantastic results!

Class trips

This week I know that the Kindergarten and Reception children and staff had an enjoyable trip to the fire station. Their highlights were finding out all the different things that firefighters do and they learnt about the 3 different sounds that the fire engine sirens make!

Year 5 enjoyed watching an interactive 3D show about space walks at the Science Museum on Wednesday. They learnt more about the ISS (International Space Station) and what happens there.

Year 4 went to visit the replica of the Golden Hinde ship on the River Thames this week. They thoroughly enjoyed finding out what life was like back then in the time of Sir Francis Drake. They found out it was dangerous to be an explorer. My favourite fact they shared with me was it was bad luck for a woman to go on board a ship in the sixteenth century!

Dwight Lions Football Competition Report - by Ben D Y5

On Thursday, 19th January the Dwight Lions Lower School football team travelled to the Powerleague in Friern Barnet to take part in the ISA Under 11's Football Tournament. Twenty eight teams entered and were put into four groups of seven. The top two teams from each group qualified for the quarter finals. The first game was against Knightsbridge and the Lions were very impressive with a 5-0 win with Kazuki scoring a hat-trick and Josh with two goals. The next two games were both won 2-0 against Avon House and Windrush Valley with Josh scoring in both and Shion and Jake opening their accounts. A tough game followed against St James and the Lions went down 0-1 in a close game. The team got back to winning ways in the next game as they beat Snaresbrook 2-1 with goals from Josh and Jake. It was all on the last group game as the Lions needed to win or draw against Gateway to go through to the quarter finals. In a close contest against the eventual winners of the tournament the Lions lost out 0-2. After conceding an early goal the Lions had the better chances, but couldn't find the back of the net and were undone in the last minute by a second goal. This result meant the Lions missed out on qualifying by goal difference. Well done to everyone who took part.

Sculptor at Dwight

Mrs. Boughton invited a local artist and sculptor into the school this week. She was called Anoushka  and she  showed the children some of her work. She explained what it was like to be a sculptor and how art can be large as well as small. Angad from Y5 commented that he found the presentation really interesting. Who knows she may have inspired some of our children to take up sculpting in later life.

Super Question and Language of the Week

Last week we asked the children What will happen at noon on Friday, 20th January in Washington DC? The correct answer was that a new president of the United States starts his job. well done to Saranya who gets a sparky for the right answer and to Zachary in Y3 who knew that the process was called an Inauguration.
We are looking at South American countries as part of learning languages and Peru will be our chosen country and therefore our language of the week will be Spanish.
