Welcome Back
We hope you had a good half term break.
Lower School Book Week
We are very excited about Book Week taking place all of next week. There will be a variety of activities and competitions including: a book character potato competition!; a decorate the class door in the style of a scene from a book competition; a dress-up-as-a-book character day (on Friday 3rd); guest readers, who will visit classes throughout the week. We have a guest author/poet spending the day with us on Thursday. Her name is Chrissie Gittens she will be selling some of her books after school on Thursday for £6 each. There is also a writes of passage activity. Students will be asked to write about a book they have read that meant a lot to them. These will be on display in the hall (with the potato entries). We would really appreciate it if you, our parents, could also fill in a writes of passage template where you tell us about a book you have read that was meaningful and why. The children will bring this home on Monday, 27th February. Please send this in with your child anytime next week. And finally, our Parent Association are hosting Book Week Disco on Friday, 3rd March from 6.30-8.00pm for Years 3-6.
Musical Skills
We encourage children to learn in a variety of ways and music is one of them as it can be great at embedding understanding and promoting creativity. Mr. Mastoridis has recently shared some work that links music with the children's inquiries. Here is a film of the children in Year 5 linking music with their recent Earth, Sun and Moon Inquiry.
Two new teams for Dwight
This week our Boys Under 9 Football Team and our Girls Year 5 and 6 Netball Team represented the school against Hereward House and St Johns respectively. Both teams are relatively new and although they didn't win this week it was great that they had an opportunity to try out their skills against students from other schools.
Exhibitions
Before the break Year 5 shared some of their learning as part of an exhibition about Space. I spent some time talking to Sofia about training to be an astronaut, and to João about applying to become an astronaut. I also watched several clips of stop motion films that demonstrated the children's understanding of the relationship between the Earth, Sun and Moon.
Exhibitions are a key component of children's learning. It is generally well known that if children teach something to other children or adults then their level of understanding increases significantly. Exhibitions facilitate this type of learning.
We are now only 3 months away form our Year 6 IBPYP Exhibition which is scheduled for June 15th. I encourage all Upper Primary children and their parents to go to have a look at the IB Middle Years (IBMYP) Exhibition which is also known as the Personal Project Evening. It is scheduled to take place at the Jubilee building next Tuesday, 28th February from 6.00-8.00pm. It will also be an opportunity to meet the incoming Upper School Principal, Mr Andy Atkinson.
