Learning in the Lower School

I hope that you enjoyed your recent Bank Holiday weekend. It is nice to see the weather is starting to improve as we participate in lots more learning activities this Summer Term. The Big Apple comes to London

We are very exited about the imminent arrival of our friends from Dwight New York. They will be arriving this Saturday, 6th May and will stay here until Friday, 12th May. Many of our the Dwight London families will be hosting them. Dwight New York are scheduled to see The London Eye, The London Dungeons, Covent Garden, The British Museum, The Tower of London, Borough Market and more. We have even arranged for a local author to visit both Year 6 and our New York colleagues next Tuesday! There are 36 children in total visiting us from New York and 6 members of staff. We wish them a happy and successful trip and invite them to London with open arms and open minds.

Paint with Food

Last week we invited a special guest into the school. An undergraduate from Loughborough University visited Year 1 and Year 3 to trial her prototype product which makes food waste into paint. We thought this was a great opportunity for learning as the prototype linked in well with the school's Green Flag status. The children discussed the design and use of the product and then had fun using the paint.  

Super Cyclists

Year 5 start their Bikeability sessions next week as part of their WOW lesson. By the end of the week they should be trained to be safer and more competent road users. Bike Safety is an important aspect of our student's lives and we hope to continue to have Bike Safety lessons for Year 5 in future years.

Playground Leaders

Throughout this term the students in Years 5 and 6 will be leading some playground games. This is good for their communication, leadership and collaboration skills, for example Clara and Moritz created an obstacle course game that showed great leadership and organisational skills that kept their group of children active and entertained.

Dwight Clubs

Our Lower School Clubs started this week. We have offered over twelve different clubs this term including some new and exciting ones such as Science Club, Radio Club, and even a Ballroom Dancing Club! All clubs run after school from 2nd May until 30th June (for 8 weeks). A list of children in each club has already been sent out and as always we expect the children in the clubs to demonstrate commitment and be open minded about new skills and activities.

Reminders

• We are still checking school uniform, please go to the website to ensure that your child has the right clothing and equipment.
  
• The roads outside the school are still busy and I wish to remind you to take care especially during drop-off and pick-up.
  
• If you arrive late at school, please take your child to the office to register, we will then ensure he/she gets to their class. You can also email the school at lsabsence@dwightlondon.org.
  

The Week Ahead

• Year 4 have their trip to the Crystal as part of their work on organisations this Tuesday, 9th May.

• Year 2 have their trip to Sir John Soane's Museum on Wednesday, 10th May to find out more about what pictures can tell us about different cultures.

1. Our Year 6 exhibition is on 15th June.
   
2. 3-way conference, Tuesday, 20th June.
3. Our Summer Fair is scheduled for Saturday, 24th June 
4. Our Arts Depot Show is on 30th June ( see above).
5. Our Lower School Sports Day is on 5th July.

Dwight Parent Association News and Events

Dwight School London International Cookbook

Have you submitted a recipe yet?! The Parent Association is hoping for your support in making this an exciting fundraising cookbook for our school community and we want great recipes from our students, parents and staff members! The cookbook price will be £15 and available for pick up at the Summer Fair. All proceeds will go directly to Parent Association.

A few rules about the recipes you submit:

• The recipe must be in metric measurements – Tablespoons and teaspoons are ok (here's a link to help convert if you need it).
• All the ingredients must be easily sourced at a London supermarket.
• It can be a recipe from an existing cookbook – all we ask is that you site the source

You can use the form here to submit the recipe for inclusion in the cookbook. 

Please fill out the boxes that are applicable and PLEASE proofread and double check your entry before you submit it, as it will be published as is. We encourage you to also submit a photograph – either of the dish or of your family or your child for inclusion in the cookbook, as this will make the cookbook great. You are also welcome to submit a few recipes as this will give us flexibility if we get many similar ones.

The final deadline for your submission is Monday, 15th May.  So don't delay!!!!

May Out and About event – Brixton Market food and history walking tour

Date: Friday, 26th May
Meet: 9.00am West Finchley Tube station or 9.50am in Brixton (exact details will be given the week of)
Tour is from 10am-1pm
Cost: £20 + lunch costs

Join us for a 3 hour guided walking tour of the Brixton Market area. John, from Liquid History, will give us an overview of the history of the area and the eateries. Afterwards we will grab lunch.

June Out and About event – A re-scheulded tour of Chislehurst Caves in Kent (due to Storm Doris cancelling the last!)
Chislehurst Caves is a 35 km long series of intersecting tunnels used for chalk and flint mining from the 13–19th centuries.

Date: Thursday, 29th June
Meet: West Finchley tube station 9.00am – or Charing Cross rail station ticketing area at 9.45am – We will take the 10:06 Southeastern Train from Charing Cross to Chislehurst (30 min ride)
We will plan to take the 11.00am caves tour.
Cost: £6 to enter the caves and approx £12 for train ticket
