Graduation

A real highlight of the school year for me has been seeing the creative efforts of our current D2 cohort. Anyone who was lucky enough to see their art exhibition or be in the audience for the music recital or any of their inventive and thought-provoking theatre productions will appreciate how hard working and creative this group of students is.

One of the great privileges of being a teacher is having the opportunity to see young people develop and grow into adulthood whilst they are in our care. As I congratulated each of the Dwight Students in our graduating class last Friday evening, I was struck anew by their maturity and that they are now young adults embarking on the next stage of their lives as independent young men and women.

Our graduation meal and ceremony was an occasion of great celebration. We took over the Haven Restaurant in Whetstone for the evening so that families and teachers could congratulate the graduates and join with them in celebrating this milestone. The students enjoyed the occasion and it was a festive, happy atmosphere all round. Camille, one of the graduates, entertained us with a joyful solo vocal rendition of The life I never led from Sister Act the Musical, and Lydia, who attended Dwight since nursery, addressed the gathering on behalf of her classmates.

This hardworking, creative cohort of students will be missed at Dwight and we wish them all the best wherever their journey takes them next. They will always be welcomed back at Dwight and we look forward to hearing about the great things they will do with their lives as they move on. Staffing

As an IB World School Dwight School London is lucky to attract staff from all over the Globe, bringing with them a rich variety or experiences and cultural insights. However, this does mean that a number of staff each year are likely to move on to other opportunities in IB schools either in the UK or abroad.

We are very fortunate to have a stable teaching staff in the Lower School, which has enabled us to maintain our team of teachers in the Lower School without recruiting additional members of staff.  However, we have made a number of new appointments in the Upper School and I am delighted to be able to inform you that we are now fully staffed for September 2017, having recruited a group of enthusiastic and talented teachers to join the school.

Flora Mather will be joining the Upper School Leadership team as the IB Middle Years Programme Coordinator. Miss Mather is currently the IBMYP Coordinator at the International School of London, and previously was the head of the English department at the Discovery College, Hong Kong. Educated in New Zealand, Miss Mather has experience in teaching in both the IB Diploma and IB MYP programmes and is very enthusiastic about the opportunity to shape learning and teaching in the IB MYP at Dwight.

Linda Trautman joins Dwight as the Subject Leader for Humanities and a Theory of Knowledge teacher. Dr. Trautman has several degrees, including a PhD in Russian History. She has a passion for Model United Nations and is looking forward to working with our MUN club. Dr. Trautman is coming to us from the Inter-Community School in Zurich, and has nearly 30 years experience as an IB educator in school in America, Asia and Europe.

Nic Carpenter, who is currently teaching at Capital City Academy, will be joining our Science department. Mr. Carpenter gained experience in teaching both IB MYP and IB DP science at the International School of Boston, before returning to live in London. He has a particular interest in using technology as a tool for learning.

Jovan Masilungan is a true local, having grown up in the North London area. Mr. Masilungan will be teaching in both the Design and the PHE departments. He currently works at St. Ignatius College where in addition to teaching Design Technology and PE, he coaches basketball and rugby teams.

Aida Sincheva will be joining our Mathematics department when she completes her teacher training at Loughborough University in the summer. Miss Sincheva, who is originally from Kazakhstan is very excited to be joining an international school and is looking forward to teaching in the IB MYP and DP programmes.

I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you of two members of staff who have been promoted to the Upper School Leadership team.

Barbara Veschi will be taking on leadership of the pastoral care in the Upper School as the Dean of Students. Miss Veschi has been a pivotal member of our pastoral team as the Assistant Dean of Students and coordinating our PSHE programme. Miss Veschi's wisdom, patience and commitment to the welfare of our students provide an excellent foundation for her important role in leading the pastoral team.

Fiona McCaffrey, has been promoted to IB Diploma Programme Coordinator. Fiona's experience as an IB Diploma Tutor and University and Careers Guidance Counsellor, in addition to teaching in both the Maths and Science departments has prepared her well for taking on responsibility for the Diploma Programme.

Wishing you an enjoyable half-term break.

Kind regards

Alison Cobbin

Head of School
