Farewells

As with many international families who come and go from our school, we know that every year we will also say farewell to some staff members. We will in the coming days and weeks  show our gratitude and wish fond farewells to the following people. John Hopkins, Principal of Upper School, he is leaving for Canada this summer. Paul Johnson is moving with his family to China. Justin Lowry, our Dean of Students, is moving on as well as his colleague in the PE department, Ashleigh Goddard. We also wish Bascia Lasocka, our laboratory technician, all the best for her return to Poland. You will have read in Ms. Cobbin's newsletter about our new staff for next year and we are pleased to be fully staffed and ready.

Author visit

On 9th June, Dwight Upper school had the opportunity to welcome Suzanne Leal, an Australian author of several books, a lawyer, commentator and also an interviewer and judge at literary events. Ms. Leal has recently published her book titled the Teacher's Secret in the UK.

She presented an inspiring writing workshop to our M1 -M3 students of how hidden stories and secret lives of people drives her writing. Our students responded with rapt attention and took every opportunity to ask questions and fully participate in the session with the author. Ms Leal's book will be on display at the school book fair on Friday, 23rd June.

Community Project and Bushcraft
To celebrate the end of the assessment week, some M5 students are enjoying three days of doing something a little different.

Mr Dacanay and I are currently away on the Bushcraft trip with 11 students. As well as survival techniques, such as fire starting, shelter building, trap setting and knife handling, this time the students are also experiencing some water-based survival activities such as fishing, raft building and canoeing.

As you will see by the photos at the top of this newsletter, the rest of the year group have been working at school, along with M1 and Year 4, in a recycling project, which culminated in a fashion show today. Thank you to Ms. Sen for organising this. You can view the video taken live during the event on our Facebook page. Photos from the Fashion show can be found here.

Student Achievement
Ahaan Saini, in M2 has dedicated many hours to swimming training. His dedication has already paid off in terms of results and achievements but he has now risen to even greater heights, having been invited by Swim England to compete in the National Open Water Championships at the end of July, in the 1.5km category for 13 year olds.

This is a fantastic achievement, and it could well open the door to the next stage of qualifying for either the English or GB Nationals at the end of July in his main event - 1,500m free-style.

Congratulations Ahaan for your success and well done to your parents for their encouragement.

SING, SING, SING!

Come and join the fun at the Dwight Community Choir, the social singing event for parents & staff at Dwight Jubilee Hall.

Upcoming rehearsal dates: June 20th and 27th, always from 5-6.30pm at the Jubilee Campus, 6 Friern Barnet Lane, N11 3LX. Text or call Jan Kraft for details: 07941 078674.

CAS News

Creativity, Action and Service (CAS)

M3 Update

In Action Service in M3 we do things to help our communities. During the school year we have had a variety of opportunities to help the diverse groups we are a part of.

In Individuals and Societies we did an Action Service activity as a part of one of the units we studied. We were asked to give up one thing that we buy and to give the money we save to Oxfam. This taught us to be more aware of what we spend our money on and what that with a small change we can help other people. -  Theano and Andrei

D1 Update

The D1 students have been actively involved in CAS activities. Besides helping out in short term activities, we have also completed many big projects. Examples include Young Voices, Eco Council, Pink Day and an Oxfam project.

  • As part of the Eco Council, Oliver, Gabriel and Keir are working hard to get Dwight a green flag.
  • As part of Young Voices, Ani trained M1-M2 students to join the Young Voices festival at the O2.
  • Pink Day, initiated by Judy, was a project to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
  • The Oxfam project was a project involving clothes and financial donations to Oxfam initiated by Asive and Petros.

We have chosen activities that allow us to combine our passion and enthusiasm with our willingness to help. All of these activities have improved our collaboration and organisation skills and made us more creative and engaged in our school life.

Besides helping us to grow as individuals, they have also helped Dwight as a community. We have been motivating the younger students, making them more aware about the problems of the world, as well as serving as role models. - Ani
