Learning in the Lower School

Year 5
Year 5 really enjoyed their visits to a temple, a mosque, a church and a synagogue over the last few weeks. This has been part of their Unit of Inquiry about Beliefs and Values. They have made their learning even more meaningful by interviewing guests in their classroom. They have interviewed the Upper School Principal, Mr. Atkinson and archaeologist. Mrs. Angliker to find out more about their values and about Greek religion. The photos show Year 5 on their visits.

Next week as part of their transition to Upper School Year 5 will visit the Upper School, sample some lessons, eat at the Dwight Cafe and meet with more of the Upper School staff. 

Trips

Visits, trips and interviews are a big part of our school culture. They give our students an authentic and real insight into what they are learning. If the learning is more meaningful to them then it is more memorable too. Year 2 will be on a trip next week to Borough Market as part of their work on How Choices Affect Wellbeing, one of the key things they will be inquiring about will be how food choices affect wellbeing, and there is a lot of different food to choose from at Borough Market! They will also get to practice their maths skills when buying some of the yummy food.

Roles

This week we announced our football team squad, our Eco Rangers, Digital Leaders and Student Council members. I will be sharing more information about these groups in the future. A key role was also announced on Friday that of Head Boy and Head Girl. These roles are available only to students in Year 6, they have to be applied for and a job description details the need for them to be ambassadors for the school and to reflect the IB Learner Profile. I am proud to say that we again had some good applications and the staff voted for Ori as Head Boy and Miya as Head Girl - Many congratulations to them both. 

Filming

We had a visit from ITN this week. They came in to film at Dwight London as part of a film commissioned by the International Baccalaureate to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the IB. They were really impressed with the behaviour of our students and with the feedback they received about the school. Thanks to all the children, staff and parents that were involved.

Jeans for Genes Day

Many thanks for encouraging your children to wear jeans to support a very worthwhile charity this week. We showed the students a short video about genes that is on the website www.jeansforgenes.org.uk and it is good that our students want to support the children and their families, who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Activities and LAMDA
Our After school Activities and LAMDA sessions have now started this week. It was good to see the Cartoon Drawing Club with students creating cartoons on their laptops. I also got to visit the Dwight Radio Club. We have our own radio station here at the Lower School next to the library. We will be helping to train our students at Dwight Radio Club to become DJs.

Football Teams. 

This week our boys football team has their first match of the 2017 - 2018 season against Southbank at home. Our girls football team have their trials set aside for Monday, 2nd October from 3.45-4.45pm on the Lower School playground. Good luck to both teams for the upcoming season.

Dwight Mic Week

We started our Dwight Mic week this week. Several of our students have been selected to share their work on our radio and we will be broadcasting it once all of the recordings have been completed, hopefully by the end of this half term. Once this has been completed you will be able to listen to our radio show any time, any place, anywhere in the world!

Holiday Club Dates

The club runs from 9am - 4pm and is for children under 7 years of age.
The dates for this academic year are:

Year 6 Bushcraft Trip
Year 6 are getting ready for their trip to Hertfordshire as part of Bushcraft at the end of next week.  They will be travelling to the site with Ms. Dunaway, Mrs. Becci and Mrs. Tainsh. Whilst they are there they will be joined in part by Upper School students and teachers. We wish them well.

Reminders

• Parking: We have noticed that some Parking signs around the school have changed. Please be aware of this if you are parking before walking your child into the school . It is getting busier so please take care crossing the roads.
• Buses: If you wish to register your interest for an after school bus service please either visit the Lower School office or contact lsoffice@dwightlondon.org
  
• Contact: If you are running late, have a transport issue, or your child is ill, you should  contact our Lower School Office by email lsoffice@dwightlondon.org.
• Breakfast Club and Opening time - Our school officially opens at 8.20am. We have noticed that some students are arriving far earlier than that. For your information we do run a Breakfast Club from 7.45-8.20am which is a paid for service for those children who arrive earlier.  Bus children are exempt from this and can join the Breakfast Club free of charge as and when their bus arrives. If your child needs to arrive early and would like to join the Breakfast Club please inform the Lower School Office.

5. 29th September Year 4 Assembly to parents 9-9.30am.
   

Super Question and Language of the Week

Our Super Question last week was: What did Ryan Yasim invent this week? He invented a material that stretches as children grow. He won a Dyson prize for his brilliant design. Ethan in Year 5 correctly found the information He wins a sparky for his House: Visionaries.

Our Super Question this week is to find out Which city will host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games?

The first student with the correct answer on Monday will get a sparky!

We also introduce our Language of the Week next week. It will be Hebrew - I know I will have many students help me with Hebrew next week and hope many enjoyed the recent Rosh Hashanna celebrations

Out and About Events for Parents

Come with us as we explore the food history and culture of the East End. Wander down the 'curry mile' while you sample samosas and Indian sweets; learn the history of the pie; taste the fish and chips voted as "Best in London" year after year; peruse the hippest food trucks in town; nosh on a salt beef beigel and finish with a sweet American import. This food tour of London is completely unique in that you design your own menu.  Your guide will bring you to the best cafes and shops in East London and explain their history and specialties - but you decide and purchase what you would like to eat.  Sites and topics covered on the tour:

Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion Exhibit @ the V&A Museum
