Learning in the Lower School

Learning Outside of the Classroom
Year 6, Year 5 and Year 1 have all spent time out of their classrooms this week. Year 6 joined M1 and M3 on a residential trip to Hertfordshire. They learned about several things such as camping skills, survival skills and basic first aid. They enjoyed making pancakes this morning out in the open!

Year 5 spent a "brilliant" day in the Upper School on Thursday. They visited both the Dwight site and the Jubilee site. They spent time with different teachers and even got to meet the Upper School Principal, Mr. Atkinson. They experienced a range of lessons. ate at the Dwight Cafe and met some diploma and middle years students too. You can view some more photos from their day here.

Year 1 walked to the park and the high street as part of their work on the local community. Next Tuesday, Miss Larragy will take them to the railway station at High Barnet where they will look for signs and other features that help create communities with their rules and routines.

Online Safety

In our Tuesday assembly this week, we spoke to the students about online safety. With the older students we discussed what good online behaviours we should adhere to and who to speak to if you are anxious. The Digital Leaders shared their top tips with students in Years 3 to 6.
With the younger students we shared a video produced by CEOP. You can view the video here; it gives good information and tips such as:

  1. People that you don't know online are strangers.
  2. People should be nice to you online.
  3. Keep your personal information private.
  4. Check with a trusted adult if you feel uneasy about something.

Online resources are a fantastic resource providing excellent learning opportunities that are age appropriate. However it is important to monitor its use, to use it in a balanced manner and to remind your child to talk about it, if they see something unusual online.

Year 4 Assembly

This week Year 4 shared some of their experiences of celebrating World Nations Day. They followed this up with a lovely assembly on Friday in front of their parents that shared their learning and was both fun, informative and full of questions. They demonstrated skills such as good planning, research, time management and cooperated very well together.

Footballers

Well done to our boys football team. They played Southbank on Tuesday and won 7-4. Mr. Williams was impressed with all of the boys for their positive impact on the game. We wish them well in their next match which is on the 6th October. We also have a Girls Football Team Trial taking place after school on Monday, 2nd October.

Jeans for Genes Day Total

Many thanks for encouraging your children to wear jeans to support a very worthwhile charity last week. We raised £174.26 - Thank -you!

Expectations: Settling In

Over the last few weeks I have been sharing what aspect of the school life are key expectations: The Learner Profile, the IB Attitudes and Taking Action. I'm pleased to see that already many of our students have responded and had praise or even Sparkies for demonstrating these key areas. We have been pleased with the way our new students and parents have settled into their new school with its new routines and expectations. Following on from this Mrs. Cobbin, Mr. Atkinson and I will be meeting with new parents over the next two weeks to discuss settling in, what went well and what we need to look at in order to improve the transition to Dwight.

Activities and LAMDA
Our After school Activities and LAMDA sessions have started. It was good to see the Origami Club last week. I watched our students making their cats, dogs and bags out of paper. It was even better to see that the club was run by four of our students from the Upper School - many thanks to Ran, Megumi, Mikiyo and Kie for helping run the Origami Club , I hope it doesn't fold! (Ho ho)

Dwight Mic Week continues....

We continued our Dwight Mic week this week. Several more of our students have been selected to share their work on our radio and we will be broadcasting it once all of the recordings have been completed, hopefully by the end of this half term. Once this has been completed you will be able to listen to our radio show any time, any place, anywhere in the world!

Super Question and Language of the Week

Our Super Question last week was: Which city will host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games? Josh in Year 5 correctly informed us that it was Paris.

Our Super Question this week is to find out Who is on the back of the new £10 note?

The first student with the correct answer on Monday will get a Sparky!

We also introduced our Language of the Week: Hebrew - Yoni in Year 4 helped me learn and pronounce hello and goodbye in Hebrew. Learning a new language can be challenging, I'm very impressed that our students often have learned two or three different languages by the time they leave the Lower School. Next week our language of the week is Italian ! I wonder if someone can help me?

Have a good weekend.

Lower School Principal
