Learning in the Lower School

Learning in the Lower School
Year 6 have had a particularly busy week. On Monday they spent the day at the Upper School. They attended several lessons: Science, Humanities (known as Individuals and Societies), Design, an English lesson with Mr. Dickenson and a Maths lesson with Ms. Bursuc. The feedback was very positive. It is good that our students are getting to know the teachers in Upper school as well as the routines and rooms within the buildings.

Year 6 also visited the Science Museum on Tuesday to have a presentation about guts! It was informative and it served as a good way to introduce the class to their Unit of Inquiry on the Human Body.

Kindergarten and Reception visited the train station this week. They enjoyed exploring the local area and were very well behaved. On Wednesday afternoon all of the Kindergarten and Reception students were joined by Years 1 and 2 to celebrate their Autumn Party. It was a great event, the children wore fancy dress outfits and I met four spidermen, four princesses, a sheep and a shark! They were entertained by a lovely lady who introduced them to some magic tricks, songs and plenty of jokes. Please see the photos above.

Activities

On Monday  I spent some time  with the Maths Club hosted by Mrs. Brooks. I met with Kelvin in Year 3 who was solving a mathematical problem online, Alex in Year 5 who was trying to park a digital car in as fewer moves as possible and I spent some time discussing sudoko grids with Alfie, Tess and Yoni. It was a fun club and I enjoyed sharing the learning with the children.

House Spirit Day.

On Friday we spent the day launching our new Houses and their colours. Our new Houses are called Artists, Pioneers and Visionaries. Their colours are white, blue and red respectively. We spent the day mixing students form across the school, to discuss House logos, chants, competitions , charities and competitive sports.

ACE Time, Parent Workshops and Parent Consultations

Thank -you to all those people who attended ACE time and the workshops this week. It was great to see so many of you and to celebrate and share our learning. Our next event involving parents is the Parent Consultations on October 31st. An emailed link was sent out on Tuesday for parents to chose their Parent Consultation slot. The Parent Consultations take place from 2.30-6.30pm in the classrooms. School does continue until 3.40pm. Also on that day we have a Parent Workshop about Phonics starting at 1.30-2.30, if you have not done so already, please  register here.

Reminders

  • British Summer Time ends - Please note that on 29th October British Summer Time ends and the clocks go back one hour. We want to remind all parents and students of the importance of being safe and being seen when the nights get darker quicker. Reflective clothing is a great way to be bright and be seen during the next few months.

Super Question and Language of the Week

Our Super Question last week was:   What is the most visited city in the World? Josh in Year 5  got the right answer: Bangkok in Thailand, and he gets a Sparky for being knowledgeable. Last week Guilherme got it right.  (I want to send my apologies to Guilherme who had a a typo in his name in the newsletter.) He is the youngest ever student to win a Sparky for answering the Super Question.

Our Super Question this week is What happened in the UK 30 years ago on October 1987?

Our thunk of the week - (A thunk is a question that makes the brain go ouch!) - This week I asked the students to consider the following - If giraffes ruled the world - how would it be different?

Have a good weekend and a lovely half term break.
