Friday, 17th November 2017 Lower School Newsletter Learning in the Lower School We all supported the Children in Need today and we were Spotacular! We are proud to announce we raised over £160 for this great cause. You can tune in to BBC this evening to find out more about the charity. It has been a great week for learning this week! Year 5 visited the Design Museum, Kensington on Monday. They attended a workshop about designing chairs. They tried sitting in different chairs before designing their own for a target audience. They asked some good questions and learnt specifically about design. They saw how advertising and marketing can impact a product and its longevity too. Year 5 presented their assembly on Friday and shared more of their understanding about advertising. They demonstrated the use of persuasive language, they shared facts about different religions, and they finished with a song, that they wrote with Mr. Mastoridis about Beliefs and Values. Learning should never stop and this is certainly the case with our parents too, several of whom visited the school on Tuesday to take part in their second lesson learning English with our EAL teacher Mrs. Kendal. Many of them are helping us translate the Learner Profile into 24 different languages. We appreciate your help!
Year 2 have taken Action and they are collecting 100 examples of things to recycle. If they are successful they will plant a tree to celebrate - what a great way to make the world a better place! Here is a photo of what they have recyled with a tree target in the background Maths Updates You may recall that last Thursday we entered a Maths Team for an inter-school competition. Our team of two boys and two girls: Miya, Yu, Yoni and Theo have now found out that they did so well in the competition they have qualified for round 2. We wish them well and please check for more details about our Maths Team next week. Maths Day and Book Fair Next week we have two big events scheduled!
We also start our Book Fair next week. The books will be housed in the ECO 1 classroom for children to visit during the day and for parents to purchase after school. Please note that 60% of the Book Fair takings go directly back to the school to spend on more books for our Library! Football Updates Our girls football team have their second match next week on Wednesday and our boys football teams play on Friday. Good luck to you all! Swimming Updates Our Lower School swimming team took part in their first inter-school competition on the afternoon of Thursday,16th November at Barnet Copthall pool. They worked hard and tried their best. They have an ISI competition on Monday and I will share all of the results in the newsletter next week. Christmas Show It is that time of year when our Kindergarten, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 students start to practice their Christmas Show. This year the show is called Penguin Pete. The students have lots of words, songs, dances and directions to learn over the next few weeks. They will be performing on Tuesday, 5th December and Wednesday, 6th December from 9-10am in our hall. Tickets are limited to two per family. You may also be keen to know that straight after both performances we are running a Phonics workshop from 10-11am that will provide an oversight of the phonics programme and how you can support your child's progress in this very important area, To reserve tickets for the show, please click here. To reserve seats for one of the workshops, please click here. Dwight Parent Association Events for Lower School The DPA is organising the Winter Fair which due to popular demand is going to be a little different this year. We are going to be risk takers and run the event on Thursday, 14th December from 2-4.30 pm in the afternoon rather than on a Saturday. We think that by having it during the school day it will mean that more children will have the opportunity to be involved and hopefully more parents will come and join us too. Some of the activities include: Meeting Santa , Bric a brac store , second hand uniform, international food and many many games for the children to play. Tickets will go on sale next week!!! Student Council Shop Our school shop opened on Friday, 17th November selling fruit snacks, Rice Krispie squares, rice crackers and water. All of the profits will go to our neighbours: The North London Hospice. We will be selling snacks every Tuesday and Friday until the end of term. Upper School International Evening! What: This is a fantastic community event where we all celebrate the internationalism of our school and sample foods from around the world. To register, please click here.
