Learning in the Lower School

We are now in our second school week of 2018 and as you can see we are already demonstrating some great learning in our classroom displays.

Year 1 have been learning to count in 2's and 5's and their display caught my eye as it is full of socks that help the students specifically visualise counting in 2's. On the display was a counting in fives section that went up to 160 and when I asked why that was they replied because that's how many fingers there are in our class!

Year 5 have been continuing to inquire about space. Their display not only shows some key questions but also highlights the key research skills, thinking skills and communication skills. We refer to these skills as Approaches to Learning.

Year 6 had a display featuring conflict, more specifically global conflict, local conflict and personal conflict. Their collage of photos made the display very vibrant and led to more questions and lines of inquiry. Next week they will visit the Imperial War Museum to find out more about conflict and its consequences, and to meet an evacuee.

Year 2 had brainstormed: What things can be discovered? They came up with some really interesting ideas such as: black holes, light, species of fish. They are going to do some more discovering when they visit the Natural History Museum next Wednesday.

Year 3 have been working on the nets of 3D shapes. They made the nets for a cube and then displayed them. The class then had to guess from looking at the net whether it would fold to make up a cube or not.

Year 4 have a display of recount texts. They have been using the past tense of verbs and adding the appropriate features that make up recount texts. They were keen to tell me about the features and about writing biographies (in the past tense) of famous explorers. They are off to visit the Golden Hind as part of their inquiry into exploration next Friday.

Kindergarten and Reception have been sharing thier feelings this week, by choosing and displaying a face that reflects how they feel.

Mrs. Hornshaw has been placing some recordable cards around the school. These show postcards of the Learner Profile and when you press the button the Learner Profile is read out to you in another language. It is a lovely way to celebrate languages and reiterate the Learner Profile.

Please note that our peripatetic students have started practising for their peripatetic assembly concerts that will be held on Tuesday, 30th January, and Friday, 2nd February. Parents will be advised which concert date their child will be performing in.

We have had several football matches in the last few days. Our boys team lost last Friday, and like all good teams they bounced back and did well in the recent 5-a-side competition getting through to the quarter finals against 32 other schools.

Good luck to Josh and Elisa in Year 5 and Year 4 respectively. They both have been selected for the Swimming National Championships due to take place at the London Olympic Aquatic Centre on Sunday, 21st January - Go Dwight!

Safety Week

During the week 5th-9th February we will be focusing even more on safety by hosting a Safety Week. We have three scheduled  activities that will be taking place during the week:

  • We will be joined by some staff from the NSPCC who will talk to the students about being safe. They will be delivering a programme called Speak out. Stay safe. that focuses on staying safe from abuse. This will take place across all year groups on Monday, 5th February. We have also arranged for Year 5 and Year 6 to attend a workshop. This will further empower them to speak out and stay safe. A letter has been emailed today with further details.
  • On Tuesday, 6th February it is National Safer Internet Day. This provides further opportunities for our students to take the lead in making the Internet a better place. Here are two websites we would like to recommend: www.saferinternet.org.uk and www.childnet.com that focus on Internet Safety. Our Digital Captains will be reiterating good habits, throughout the week. We also have a section on our school website with E-Safety News and Information.
  • We will have a visit from our local police constable: Community PC Wapshott will be visiting us on Wednesday, 7th February. She will talk to classes about stranger danger and the law.

Throughout the week we will be reminding the students about being safe in school and  at home.

Year 6 visit to Upper School on 25th January

Our Year 6 students have visited the Upper School on several occasions and next week we want to make their day there as realistic as possible. Therefore, they will register at Upper School, spend all day in lessons, have their lunch and be dismissed from there! This makes their experience as close as possible to what their lives will be like in September. Full details will be emailed to Year 6 parents on Monday.

Women's FA Cup Final

We recently sent out a letter to all families with students in Years 3-6 about getting tickets for the Women's FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on 5th May. These are available until January 26th via your child's WisePay account.

Upper School Taster Evening

We look forward to seeing many of you at the Upper School Taster Evening on Thursday, 25th January!

It is open to all, but we particularly encourage parents of students in Years 4, 5 and 6 to attend. For full details of the evening's programme, please click here.

Next week we want to know " Which member of the royal family is going to get married this year and to whom?

Our first Language of the Week this term was German and Josefine in Year 2 helped us learn to say Good Morning in German ( Danke Josefine!). Next week it is Gaelic!

Have a great weekend and I hope to see several of you at the Upper School Taster Evening on Thursday 25th.
