Learning in the Lower School

Learning in the Lower School

We have been sharing and celebrating our learning over the course of this week.

Year 6 have continued their work on World War II. They reflected upon their interviews with evacuees last week, and they want to share photos of the artefacts they gathered as part of their unit on Conflict. Next week they will be starting their Unit of Inquiry on Governmental Systems by visiting Parliament on Tuesday, 6th February.

Our after school clubs are full of fun activities  Last week I spent time in Mosaic Club run by Mrs. Hornshaw helping Tess in Year 3 complete her tile plan on the computer. I also spent some time in Chess Club run by Mr. van den Bosch watching Eliza and Elina battle out a hard fought match that ended in an amicable draw. Clubs give our students a chance to take risks and to try something new, a chance to demonstrate their commitment, and of course a chance to learn in a new setting with a new group.

The Year 5 students have continued to work this week on their mini exhibition that will take place next Thursday between 9.00am and 10.00am. They also thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Wallace Collection on Monday where they looked at a variety of art that linked some of their mathematical inquiries. They responded very sensibly when there was a fire alarm at the venue.

Year 2 have been sharing their videos of science experiments. I was particularly impressed with Kade's experiment that demonstrated his knowledge of magnetism and gravity. Great stuff!

ACE Time
We are inviting Parents into school  next week for ACE time - ACE time stands for Adult Child Evaluation time, and it gives parents the opportunity to spend time with their child in class and to specifically share the learning that is in their books, on their google sites and displayed on the walls.
We hope to see you there - Kindergarten, Reception, Years 1, 2 and 5 are invited in on Thursday, 8th  February between 9.00am and 10.00am. Years  3, 4, and 6 are invited in on Friday, 9th February between 9.00am and 10.00.

Congratulations to our Young Voices Choir who performed very well at the O2 on Wednesday. Well done to Miya, Sofia, Freya, Oliver, Charlie, Kana, Saranya, Bruno, Yu, Emma, Tamar, Alex H, Josh H, Rayaan and Ronika. Sport Update

The Boys Football team shared a recent report with us here.

Safety Week

During the week 5th-9th February we will be focusing even more on safety by hosting a Safety Week. We have three scheduled  activities that will be taking place during the week:

  • We will be joined by some staff from the NSPCC who will talk to the students about being safe. They will be delivering a programme called Speak out. Stay safe. that focuses on staying safe from abuse. This will take place across all year groups on Monday, 5th February. We have also arranged for Year 5 and Year 6 to attend a workshop. This will further empower them to speak out and stay safe. A letter has been emailed today with further details.
  • On Tuesday, 6th February it is National Safer Internet Day. This provides further opportunities for our students to take the lead in making the Internet a safer place. Here are two websites we would like to recommend: www.saferinternet.org.uk and www.childnet.com that focus on Internet Safety. Our Digital Captains will be reiterating good habits throughout the week. We also have a section on our school website with E-Safety News and Information.
  • We will have a visit from our local police constable: Community PC Wapshott will be visiting us on Wednesday, 7th February. She will talk to classes about stranger danger and the law.

Throughout the week we will be reminding the students about being safe in school and  at home.

Reminders

  • SAFETY CONCERN - Please use the side gate by the Eco Building when entering and exiting the school whenever possible. We are concerned that some unescorted children are entering and exiting the school via the car park gate when cars are moving.
  • We still have a lot of lost property. Please do check if you think your child may have lost something. The (full) lost property box is by the side of the Music room. Items that are not labelled or claimed may find their way to the Dwight Parent Association Second Hand Uniform shop on Friday, 2nd February.

We set the following topical Super Question for next week which is - What right did women gain in the UK, 100 years ago?

Our  Language of the Week  was  Korean and many thanks to Andrew in Year 3 who helped us to learn some new Korean words.

Have a great weekend
