Early Years Newsletter

This week's news from Kindergarten and Reception

Dear Parents,

Here is an outline of our learning this week:

  • In order to observe changes to ingredients, we made donuts and REALLY enjoyed eating them.
  • We noticed that our runner beans and sunflower seeds were getting too big for their pots so we re-planted them into the vegetable patch where we can continue to observe them growing.
  • The sun has been very welcome this week and we have made the most of opportunities to play outside by making potions, using tools and building dens. Some of the children used potato peelers to  peel bark off sticks (whittle sticks).
  • We have been catching up with our assessments this weeks and the children have been showing us their Literacy and Numeracy skills.
  • The cress we planted has finally grown. We noticed that the cress growing in the dark didn't grow very well and was yellow rather than green. This led to a discussion about the importance of light for plants to grow well.
  • With Sports Day approaching, we have been practising the races that we will do on the day.
  • Molly, the dog, came to visit in the library and a small group of children when to read to her.
  • Using natural materials and clay, some children made 3D sculptures which are displayed in the Lodge entrance hall.

 Learning in Kindergarten:

  • We completed some Phonics and Maths assessments.
  • Our new book of the week was called The Swing Ball and the children made up their own story by using the pictures.
  • We read CVC words using sound buttons.
  • Using a computer game called Phonics Play, we read and sorted real and nonsense words.

  Learning in Reception:

  • We wrote instructions about how to plant a bean.
  • We updated our Phonics records and were really impressed with the progress the children have made since our last assessment.
  • The children used the talk tins to listen to simple captions and they tried to write the captions independently.
  • We counted and ordered numbers and did some addition and subtraction problems using objects.

Have a lovely half term break!
