Friday, 4th October, 2019 Welcome from the Head of School On 15th and 17th October we will be hosting two Open House events so that members of the local community can join us to learn more about the education we offer at Dwight. The vast majority of inquiries that come to our admissions department are via word of mouth recommendations and we rely on our current families to help spread the word about the inspiring education on offer at Dwight.

Football Crazy It has been a debut week for many of our Football crazy students who represented the Dwight Lower School against other schools this week. Thanks to Mr Williams we have several fixtures for both our boys and girls team in place. On Monday Gali in Year 6 scored the only goal of the game in their home match against St Johns. Well done to the team who start the season with a 100% winning record. Read more here!
Principal for the day (Friday 4th October) Congratulations to Rapha in Year 6 who was our Lower School Principal for the day. He won the prize at the Summer Fair and during his tenure he made the decision to have a non uniform day and to ban giving out homework on a Friday. Also during the day he: met the Head of School, Mrs Cobbin; hosted part of the assembly; reviewed a new student application; set up shared reading time and generally had a nice day being bossy! He did a far better job than I!
Learning in EYFS Dear parents, Here is an outline of our learning this week.
Forest School and Moat Mount I'm not sure who was more excited to be at Moat Mount this week, the children or Miss Tomlin! We had a great time being back in the woods. The youngest children learnt some songs and games and then played 'hide and seek' to practice coming back to base when called. In Year 1, the children learnt how to use their senses to find natural materials. They sorted them into categories before using the materials to create their own natural artwork. Year 2 continued with their 'Communities' theme by building a miniature village. They had to think about the different services that might be needed. We had houses, an airport, a bakery and an army base constructed using natural materials. Year 3 used their senses to look for beautiful views in the woods, linking to their unit about visual arts. They had an empty frame and had to lead a partner to a view that they loved and show them through the frame. Year 4 had the opportunity to learn about working within safe boundaries and played some team games relying on them to be good communicators.
Young Designers Alma Ayadi and Drake O'Neill in M5 entered a competition to 'Design a Building of the Future' and they ended up as the National Design Winners! One of their prizes was to visit the BRE Innovation Park in Watford, Hertfordshire. The visit happened this week and these students had the chance to experience how we will be living in 10-20 years from now. There was a focus on homes with sustainability in mind and this included; collecting rain and air-conditioning water waste to flush our toilets; innovative brick designs and material choices to insulate and re-heat our homes. It was a great in-sight into future living, not just in the UK but around the world. See more photos here!
Victorious Volleyballers Monday 30th September, North Bridge house Score: 25-16, 25-19
Match Report: Dwight school played against Northbridge House this Monday. Dwight won both sets with outstanding teamwork, communication, and technique. The player of the match was Povilas with his powerful serves and strategic thinking with placing the ball. Good job Dwight :) - Sterling O'Neill
Student Council Last week we heard some exceptional speeches from students wanting to run for our 2019/2020 Dwight School London Student Council. I am a huge supporter of Student Councils in schools as it gives students a voice in the school and allows them to take action on a range of different initiatives. Please here for our 2019/2020 successful candidates, but I want to thank all of those who showed that they were real risk-takers by running for the positions.
Independent Schools Association Regional Art Competition Our art teacher, Ms Ross, attended the Autumn Day Conference as part of our collaborations with the Independent Schools Association. As part of this conference we were able to submit some student artwork to be judged in a competition with other independent schools. We are so lucky to have a talented set of artists at Dwight School London and we like to celebrate the process of their work as much as the product. We so pleased to announce the following awards that some students received for their work:
DPA: Out and About recap On Friday 20th September the Dwight Out Club enjoyed a trip out to Kew Gardens to see the Dale Chihuly: Reflections of Nature exhibit. Set against the beautiful natural backdrop of Kew, Chihuly's vibrant glass art sculptures dazzled in the Autumn sun. Join the club next month for a trip to the Museum of Brands. Check the Dwight calendar for more details.

Internet Safety On Tuesday of this week we reminded to all of the students in the Lower School about Internet Safety. This is increasingly highlighted as a key area across all schools. It is something that ultimately is a learning journey for many of our students and is something that we look to them to be responsible for. We use the SMART acronym, from the Kidsmart website. It reiterates that the children need to be SMART (Safe Meeting Accepting Reliable and Tell). For further information please check the website.
Holiday Club Over the half term and end of term breaks we run a Holiday Club for Dwight students and guests. It is for students aged K1 to Year 2 (3 to 7). Holiday Club is run by staff from the Dwight School London and further details can be found on our website. Homework Club - After School Homework club runs from Monday to Thursday after school in the Dwight Cafe, and it is a very useful aspect of our Upper School life. This club runs until 5pm and students will be fully supervised by some of our excellent teachers - see below. This is an ideal chance for students to do their homework in a supervised environment and get some personalised support in the process.

University and Careers Evening at Dwight On Tuesday, 15th October from 6:00pm in Jubilee Hall, we will be holding an information session for parents/guardians of M5 - D2 students on all aspects of careers and university guidance. These will be introduced over the coming months. You are invited to attend this evening session so that you are informed about key milestones in this process, as well as feel equipped to support your child through these experiences.
