Lower School Newsletter

Learning in the Lower School

This week year 5 have been exploring new places that link into their Unit of Inquiry on values and beliefs. They went to the world famous London Islamic Centre near Regent's Park, where they met an imam and discussed features of Islam. Yesterday the Year 5 students walked to the local church, St Barnabas, where they discussed Christianity. All of these trips are helping the Year 5 students to be more open-minded and understanding of differing values and beliefs. The Year 5 teachers have been extremely impressed with the way our students have behaved.

This week also saw the start of clubs and I spent time in two of the clubs this week. The first was on coding and I watched as the students were learning about the building blocks of websites. On Thursday I visited  debating club, it was good to hear the students thinking through their responses to provocations such as Is wearing fur acceptable?
The students demonstrated excellent reflection and collaboration skills.

Year 2 have been learning about the importance of healthy food and they invited their parents in to talk about healthy foods from different countries. On Wednesday they ate some freshly prepared Japanese sushi and previously they enjoyed healthy foods from India, the UK and Israel.

Art Competition
Mrs Cobbin joined us on Tuesday and launched a new Art competition for Years 3 to 6. The students were asked to create an image that would represent one of the ten learner profile words caring, reflective, open-minded, risk-taker, knowledgeable, balanced, principled, thinker and inquirer. Entries are to be on A4 paper and any media can be used. The students name, class and learner profile should be written on the back of the paper, the competition closes on the 1st of November.

Holiday Club
As we get closer to half term, we would like to remind you that Dwight runs a successful Holiday Club which takes place during all of the holidays and is for children aged 7 and below. If you are interested please click here to register. Registration for the upcoming half term closes on the 14th October.

Head Boy and Girl
Over the past two weeks we have been encouraging Year 6 students to apply for the role of Head Boy and Head Girl.

Some of the responsibilities would be to demonstrate the IB Learner Profile and to be an ambassador for the school as well as leading the student council for a year.

This is the first time we have asked the students to apply and to be honest we were astounded by the quality of letters, emails, videos, presentations and flow charts that were submitted. It is the highest callibre of applications I have ever witnessed in a primary school.

The staff then voted for the person and application that they felt best fit the job description and after a very tight vote, I'm proud to announce that Rebecca Pattni and Jake Hawkes were chosen - congratulations to them both, and congratulations to all the applicants for demonstrating such high levels of talent. Other leadership roles will be announced throughout the remainder of this term.

Upcoming Trips

Next week students in M1, M2 and M3 in the Upper School go on a 3-day residential camp called Bushcraft where they will partake in a wide range of  team building activities based in the woods of Hertfordshire.

This is a great opportunity for our older students in the Lower School to visit the Upper School, spend time with the teachers there and get to know the Upper School a little better before transitioning over. Therefore next week Year 5 and Year 6 will be going on trips to  the Upper school. Year 6 will visit on Wednesday and Thursday, and Year 5 will visit on Thursday.

Super Question of the Week

This week the Super Question was Which author would have celebrated his 100 birthday this week? The answer was Ronald Dahl, who would have been 100 on 13th September, the answer was correctly given by Antoni in 4V who gets a Sparky for being Knowledgeable.
