Early Years Newsletter

This week's news from Kindergarten and Reception

Dear Parents,

This week we:

  • had a focus on games as part of our Let's Play Unit of Inquiry. We asked the children what a game is, which games they know, who makes the rules and what happens if there is an argument.
  • taught the children strategies to choose who gets a turn first in a game. We learnt eeny, meeny, miny, moe, rock-paper-scissors and ip-dip sky blue.
  • asked the children to describe different games to us and explain how to play them.
  • watched a video made by students in another school explaining how to play What's the Time Mr. Wolf?.
  • investigated ice by trying to melt it with salt and sand.
  • learnt to make unicorns and cats with our clay.
  • used palettes to mix different paint colours.
  • visited the Library in North Finchley on Monday and went to Sainsbury's on Tuesday.
  • had a toast bar at snack time. The children used the bread they bought in Sainsbury's to make toast for their morning snack.
  • got into our costumes for the Christmas show and had our photographs taken for the programme.
  • wrapped books for advent. The children chose their favourite book then wrapped it. Each day we will open a mystery book for story time.

  • Played Silly Soup and had to find objects beginning with the sound S.
  • Used mirrors to look at the shape our mouths make when we say ssssssss.
  • Recognised numerals by using a spinner.
  • Sang songs about weather and the days of the week.

  • Started to write simple captions. We tried to listen carefully to all of the sounds in the word.
  • Recognised numerals up to 20 and learnt to count in steps of 10.
  • Read captions - this will be a focus for the next 2 weeks before we progress to Phase 3 in the new year.

Bring a favourite game from home (non electronic) and we will play it in small groups. We will return all games at the end of the day.

Quote of the Week

...And at the end of the day your feet should be dirty, your hair messy and your eyes sparkling. Shanti
