Learning in the Lower School

Ace Time

We have only been back for a week and we have already had a wide range of learning experiences!

Year 6 had an interesting day trip to The Houses of Parliament on Thursday. This is an integral part of their understanding of how governments work and how laws are passed. Tamar in Year 6 commented that she met an MP who talked to the class about Brexit, the NHS and how laws are made.

Year 4 also had a trip on Thursday to the British Library. They looked at a range of maps as detectives to see how countries and borders had changed over many years. Josh in Year 4 said he really liked it.

On Wednesday we were visited by Google and we had a Virtual Reality (VR) day. We looked through VR glasses and explored places that were tied in to our current Units of Inquiry, for example Year 1 are studying how people live and how that has changed over time and they went on a virtual reality tour of Buckingham Palace. I also saw some nice pieces of work this week - Naoki and Charlene from Reception shared their written work with me, they have both independently written several sentences about themselves independently, which is very impressive. Elina in Yea 4 also shared a piece of collaborative factual work about people's rights demonstrating her understanding of paragraphs. It gave detailed descriptions, and shared references and quotes from a range of sources. Elina took action by sharing her perspectives - we will be rewarding action with a Sparkie. Students also earn Sparkies when they model the IB Learner Profile and learner attitudes.

Our Dwight Scientists are running a competition to design a logo that they will use to represent their group. This will close on Tuesday, 17th January.

Reminder: It is getting colder and is forecast to get worse - please ensure that your child has a coat, hat and gloves.

We hope that you had a good break and we would like to wish you all a happy and healthy new year.
