Early Years Newsletter

This week's news from Kindergarten and Reception

Dear Parents,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We are pleased to welcome three new students into our class. Valentina and Ora in KG1 and Baybars in KG2.

This week we have been settling back into routines and have started to look at our new Unit of Inquiry about People Who Help Us.

This week we:
  • completed our pre-assessment for our unit by finding out what children know about people who help us. We presented them with different toys that had problems such as toothache, hair that is too long, a bump on the head, broken arm etc and the children had to tell us where they thought the toys should go for help.
  • drew pictures of people that help us.
  • had a mystery egg in the classroom and encouraged the children to ask questions and think about which animal laid the egg. One of the skills we will reinforce this unit is about formulating questions so we looked at books, asked other adults and used Google to find out that it was an Ostrich egg. We have made a space in the classroom for this so if you have any objects that you think the children might be interested to look at, please send them in.
  • played Guess Who a game about asking questions.
  • reviewed Phase 1 and 2 of Letters and Sounds ready to move onto phase 2 and 3 next week.
  • counted and recognised numerals and talked about which number comes next.
  • had a big interest in marble runs and provided the children with materials to try and build their own marble runs.
  • set up a fire station role play area and made fire extinguishers to enhance the play.
  • painted with mud in the garden and snipped the branches of a Christmas tree.
  • took our 5 year olds to the Google Virtual Reality expedition where they were able to explore under the sea, in space and a recycling plant.
  • continued to explore the clay.

Next week we will:

  • find out about the people in school that help us every day and think about questions that we want to ask them.
  • visit Highgate Woods on Tuesday afternoon for Forest School activities.
  • continue with our fire station role play area and will try to plan a trip to a real fire station in the coming weeks.

 NOTICES

  • The booking form for February Holiday Club is now on the school website here.
  • We would like to collect more tubes for our marble run. Can you please save your cardboard tubes and pringles tubes?

ACTION

With all the interest in the Ostrich egg this week, we would like the children to conduct some research. We would like them to find out Which different animals lay eggs? Please take time to discuss how we might find out the answers rather than telling them the information immediately. We have set a time aside on WEDNESDAY for the children to present their findings. They may just like to tell us what they found out or they may like to make a picture/poster to show their learning.

We would like as many children to participate as possible so please let us know if you would like any further suggestions.
