Imaginary Civilization
Our M4 students have been studying in Spanish how old civilizations shaped their own culture and developed traditions, beliefs and values according to their own realities. We have discussed how some of these aspects have persisted and have had an impact on our own cultures today. Students have studied, and reflected upon the cultures in Latin America prior to the arrival of the Spanish ( Mayans, Aztecs and Incas). As their final project, this week they did creative presentations on their own imaginary civilization.

Divine Designs

The design department has been very busy this term. M2 have been investigating Rube Goldberg machines to make their own mouse (or super hero) traps! Taking what is usually an IB Diploma-level unit of study and working in teams of four they have successfully managed to research, plan, design and manufacture their own machines to drop a trap onto an unsuspecting creature or hero. In M1 students have made wildlife feeders as part of their investigation on Globalisation and Animals in Urban Environments. In M3 students have been making flashlights and radios as part of their unit on Electronics for Survival. The Cadcam Jewellery club have also been very creative with their jewellery designs.

Staff Appreciation Day

It is always lovely to be appreciated. For parents to show such a depth of appreciation to our staff on Thursday of this week is a wonderful way to finish the term. Although Spring is now here, this is the term that has the long dark winter months in it, and it has really made our staff feel good as they go into the school vacation.

On behalf of all of them, I thank the parents for the generous offerings on Thursday, but more so for the ongoing level of engagement and support that is always shown to us.

Quiz Night
One of these forms of appreciation was illustrated on Saturday evening, when the hardworking Dwight Parents Association put on the annual Quiz Evening. Again the generosity of our parent body seemed to know no limits, and many people put in a huge effort to support this fundraiser, which did indeed raise a huge sum of money for the betterment of the students in the school. It was marvellous to see support coming from across the Upper and Lower School and on behalf of the staff, I thank the parents for organising this fun event.

M5 and D2
The vacation is an essential time to review work for the assessments taking place in May. I know that teachers have given guidance on what needs to be done, so please do help the students to find a good balance between effective studying as well as alternative activities. Intensive revision is not generally regarded as best practice, although thorough revision is. Breaks need to be taken, as well as a healthy diet of food, water, fresh air and sleep.
