Early Years Newsletter

This week's news from Kindergarten and Reception

Dear Parents,

Welcome back; we hope that you have a nice half term break. It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of the academic year in this final half term. There are a lot of events coming up in the coming weeks so please make sure you are checking the calendar, newsletters and any communications from Angela Bridge.

This week we:

  • started preparing for our assembly - you are in for a treat!
  • read a book about ways to save water.
  • read The Selfish Crocodile, the story that we will perform during our assembly.
  • did Funky Fingers activities.
  • enjoyed playing in our new Beach Area where lots of sandcastles were made. Many children also wrote postcards.
  • observed that our garden patch has grown so much over the break. All of our vegetables are looking very healthy indeed.

Kindergarten

This week we:

  • learnt about the names of the characters in the Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) books: Mum, Dad, Biff, Chip and Kipper.
  • introduced the first book from the ORT At School. KG2 will take home one of these books each week.
  • introduced the sound d and sorted objects beginning with this sound.
  • wrote the letter d on white boards.
  • played a maths games where the children rolled a die and collected the same amount of tokens.

Reception:

  • ordered numbers.
  • wrote missing numbers on a number line.
  • wrote numerals on whiteboards.
  • started to learn about how numbers can be made up from tens and ones.
  • learnt about the sound oa and did some writing using words with this sound.
  • started to learn about story openers. We looked in different books at all of the ways stories begin. We then wrote some of our ideas on a die. We rolled the dice and made up a story with whichever 'opener' it landed on.
Action

Kindergarten - Try to learn the names of the Oxford Reading Tree Characters (you will find some pictures in your trays to take home).

Reception - Make the story starter dice and roll it (you will find this in your tray.)  Invent a short story according to which story opener the dice lands on. We would love it if we could have a copy of your story, either written by you or by someone who can help you at home.

All -  Can you find out which coins and notes we use in England? We will be learning about money next week.

Notices
  • Some of you may have received a note about a specific costume for our assembly. If you have not received a note, we would like all of the children to be dressed as a jungle creature or your choice. It would be helpful to start sending costumes as soon possible but we would like all of costumes in school by Friday 16th please.
  • Our assembly will take place on Wednesday, 21st June at 9.00am and should last for approximately 30 minutes.
