Lower School Newsletter

Learning in the Lower School

It has been a lovely and a busy week in the Lower School!

Sports Day
On Wednesday we hosted our Sports Day. All of our older students took part in track and field activities and our youngest children enjoyed novelty relays and races.

Sports day gave our students a chance to push themselves both physically and mentally. I was very impressed with all of the 400metre runners. Our students also demonstrated excellent sporting behaviour throughout and showed a commendable sense of commitment and teamwork.

As this was a House competition the eventual winners were the Inventors who won with over 1000 points defeating the Discoverers and the Explorers.

Please click here to view more photos from the day. Many thanks to everyone who came to support the event it was a great day.

House Update
On Thursday, the Lower School students were given the task of drawing next years Houses for the Whole School. They are to be renamed as ARTISTS, PIONEERS and VISIONARIES. Lola and Tristan in the EYFS class made the draw. The results were:

Discoverers and Gandhi will become Artists and their colour will be white.
Inventors and Mandela will become Pioneers and their colour will be blue.
Explorers and King will become Visionaries and their colour will be red.
These will be the new Houses from September 2017.

We have shared two assemblies with parents this week. On Thursday, the Year 5 students presented a lovely recap of their learning through the game show format of Who wants to be a Millionaire. They shared some of their work about poetry, Macbeth, shapes and the water cycle. They learned a witty poem and shared the details and adverts of their Marketing work for this term's Unit of Inquiry.

On Friday, our Year 6 students presented the final assembly of the academic year. It was an emotional occasion. We are very proud of what they have achieved and of their potential. In saying goodbye we genuinely wish all of our leaving students all the very best for the future. The Year 6 students shared their memories, some of their work and anecdotes. It was a lovely way to finish the year.

Byes, books and community spirit
We are almost at the very end of the academic year. We had a transition day on Friday to give our students a taster of what their class will be like in September as they move year groups. We have started to say our goodbyes and we have shared a website about books for those students who want to read extra over the summer break.

On Tuesday we had the most fantastic surprise, our Parent Association organised a Staff Appreciation Day. Each member of staff received a box of letters thanking them which was a lovely sentiment and demonstrated our great Dwight community spirit - on behalf of all the staff I would like to thank you for the surprise and for your ongoing support throughout the year.

Lovely Feedback

It was lovely to hear feedback after our events this week, if any other parents would like to email me please do so as we would like to use your quotes for our website.

Year 5 Unit of Inquiry

Year 5 students have been preparing for their stalls event. This ties into their Unit of Inquiry work on Providing goods and services. As part of their work they have researched a product/service, they have marketed it and will host a stall on Friday, 7th July from 2.40pm. Parents are invited to attend if they wish. It will be in the playground and it should be a great way to demonstrate their learning.

Knitting Project

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our knitting squares project for the children's hospital in Malawi. I am sure they will be very happy!

If you still have squares for us, please bring them in before the end of this term.

  • Safety:  It is particularly important to remind parents to be safe when dropping off their children in the morning. Please ensure that you park in a safe place and that you are aware of other drivers, neighbours, and pedestrians in the area.
  • Have a safe Summer break too

Key dates for the remainder of this term

  1. End of Year reports are due to be sent out on Monday, 10th July.
  2. Tuesday, 11th July is Development Tuesday and the last day of the academic year; school will close at 2.30pm on that day.
  3. School starts again Monday, 4th September.

Super Question and Language of the Week

This week our Super Question was   Who won the the Tour de France in 2016? It was fitting that Yoni in Year 3 knew the right answer was Chris Froome from England. Yoni now has 19 Sparkies which is a record in the Lower School this year - well done Yoni.

And finally, we have just heard how well the Upper School have done in their IB exams. Their results are amazing and we wish all the graduates best wishes for the future. You can read more about their success here.

Have a good weekend.
