Early Years Newsletter

This week's news from Kindergarten and Reception

Dear Parents,

Here is an outline of our learning this week:

  • we went on a walking journey and took pictures along the way. The next day we made a map of our journey, trying to remember the correct order for the pictures.
  • the children had a chance to show off their learning during ACE time. Thank you for those who were able to attend. We hope that you enjoyed your visit.
  • on Wednesday we had our Autumn Party and enjoyed an entertainer that had us dancing, singing and joining in with magic tricks.
  • as part of our learning about sequencing and time we made jam sandwiches and the children had to think about the order in which we do this. We took photographs of each step and then the children had to place them in the correct order.
  • following on with our learning about primary colours, the children mixed red, blue and yellow paint onto paper plates using cotton buds. This created a very nice effect.
  • for the first time this term, we were able to go and play in the rain using our protective suits. The children enjoyed jumping into a tray of soapy water and seeing how high they could splash it.
  • as part of our unit about journeys, we rode the tube to High Barnet Station, walked to the top of the steep hill and waved at all the transport going past us and then rode back again. It was so much fun!

 Learning in Kindergarten:

  • in Maths, the children talked about Chance using the words possible and impossible. They played a quiz game by listening to a sentence e.g An alligator will come to school today, and they had to say whether this was possible or impossible.
  • we read the story Some Dogs Do where we talked about whether it was possible for a dog to fly.
  • we did some simple problem solving with one more and one less. For example, if one child goes home early, how many are left?
  • we ordered numbers from 1 - 10.
  • in Phonics we talked about rhythm and rhyme and played a game called Silly Soup with a selection of rhyming objects - E.g cat, hat, cat, mat, bat.
  • we sang a selection of Nursery Rhymes everyday such as; 5 Little Speckled Frogs, 5 Little Monkeys and Miss Polly had a Dolly.

  Learning in Reception:

  • in Phonics, we continued to review the sounds we have covered and learnt some new ones. So far we have learnt the sounds: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d  and have been reading words with these sounds such as: tap, man, map, dad, dig  etc. There is an optional homework task to help reinforce some of these skills - please check your drawer.
  • using the words always, sometimes and never, we tried to think of events that happen in school. For example, we always go to the playground for playtime, sometimes use the iPads and never pet an elephant.
  • 13 was our number of the week and we played games and used the abacus to reinforce our understanding of this number.
  • we played number lotto and pairs to work on our recognition of numbers up to 20.
  • using number cards, we ordered numbers to 20. Ms. Tomlin then removed numbers and the children had to work out what was missing and say how they knew.

  • as it is the Half Term break next week, we will not be sending home any reading books. We hope that you have a relaxing break and look forward to seeing you the following week.
