Upper School News

We returned from half-term to celebrate the "Dia de los muertos", a Mexican festival practiced in early November. It has its origins in ancient Mesoamerican cultures that blended with those of the Spanish, who arrived in Mexico in the early 1500s. Mexicans believe that the souls of the dead can return to the world of the living for those two days. It is a joyful holiday with gatherings held in graveyards and altars built for deceased loved ones. Having in mind the MYP global context of  "cultural and personal expression", the M3 Spanish students celebrated and learned. After a presentation on this cultural event of significant importance in Mexico, our students were very lucky to have a makeup session run by the promising and talented makeup artists, Isabella and Henar from M4. Once we were all ready and in this special day spirit, the group headed to the Mexican restaurant, Mestizo, where they enjoyed a typical Day of the Dead meal including the typical Pan de Muerto as well. A great day was had that they will all treasure.

I hope you all saw the important email in your in-boxes this week about the Student Teacher Parent Conferences on the 9th (evening) and 10th of November (all day) which you can also find here

As with any new initiative for many the system worked smoothly and for others there were teething problems and glitches. We received some useful feedback from the Dwight Parent Association reps and we are adapting the organisation to resolve some appointment problems. There will be no classes on Friday 10th November as all teachers are meeting with students and parents on that day so students come to school (in uniform) only for their appointments. Knowing this can be difficult for childcare at the last minute, please email or call Mrs McCormack and leave the name of any student who wishes to be supervised at Jubilee for private study while they are not at the Dwight campus for the event. Please also remember that, should you not get the slots you want, you can make appointments with teachers, tutors and supervisors at any time in the year.  Contact Javier Dominguez at the Dwight Campus if you are having any trouble with the online system or schedules.

To music! On Thursday after school Mr Kraft and Ms Kennedy hosted a short but superb Music Recital involving four of our top senior music students. It was a real treat and involved Clara, Ran, Ezekiel and Jacques playing works of JC Bach, Haydyn and Debussy. Some of the performances are recorded for IB DP examinations and we were very proud to hear Jacques from D2 on the Cello (accompanied by Dr Flores on piano) play so well for his DP exams this year.

There are lots of day trips next week for DP students:

● The DP 1 Chemistry students will attend a trip to Friends House on the 6th of November in     London all day with Ms McCaffrey

● Three lucky D1 students (Ion, Eleonore and Ezekiel) are out on Wednesday afternoon with      me attending a "Sixth Form Question Time" at Westminster with MPs and religious leaders.

● Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) and Physics students will be attending a series of lectures by various researchers across the country. The students are able to find out what is happening at the forefront of what they are studying, and explore career options with some of today's leading scientists. The exhibition is free for them to attend, but your child will need an optional packed lunch (or money for lunch) and their oyster card for travel to and from the centre. They will need to make their own way from home and meet at St James's Park underground station at 10 am.

Where: Emmanuel Centre, 9-23 Marsham Street, Westminster, London SW1P 3DW
When: Wednesday 8th & Thursday 9th Nov 2017 (10.00am - 4.00pm)

They will need to make their own way back home or school for the student-parent-teacher conference later on Thursday.

SING, SING, SING!

Come and join the fun at the Dwight Community Choir, the social singing event for parents & staff at Dwight Jubilee Hall.

Upcoming rehearsal date: 7 November from 5-6.30pm at the Jubilee Campus. Contact Mr Kraft for details
