Early Years Newsletter

This week's news from Kindergarten and Reception

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for coming to watch Penguin Pete. The children worked so hard and their costumes were amazing!

Our Learning this week:

  • As the end of our Unit of Inquiry about Journeys is coming to an end, we are starting to think about ways to summarise our learning. We have been asking the children to help us make a log about any journeys they have been making and then we are trying to categorise them into whether the journey was planned/unplanned/real or imagined.

  • We have been completing some seasonal activities such as making snowman cards, a shaving foam Christmas tree, paper chains and paper snowflakes.

  • The children have all chosen and wrapped a book for our holiday activity. Each day a few children get the opportunity to unwrap their book and we read it at story time.

  • Some children did some homework by conducting research about penguins. They then had the opportunity to present their posters to the rest of the class. We also read an information book and wrote some statements about penguins and the children had to decide if it was true or false.

  • We made bottle penguins.

  • Many children have used the mark-making area to write their own letters to Santa and they have posted them in the postbox that we made.

 Learning in Kindergarten:

  • We have been practising writing our names on mini-whiteboards, some children even tried writing their friends' names  as well.

  • We have now finished Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds and we will start introducing Phase 2 during the next term. We will cover the following letter sounds: s, a, t, p, i, n.

  • We will continue learning the names and the properties of the 2D shapes.

  Learning in Reception:

  • We have come to the end of Phase 2 of Letters and Sounds and have covered the following letter sounds: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, e, r, g, o, c, k, ck, b, f, l, ff, ll and u. We will continue to work on recognising key words and in particular, the tricky words: the, no, go, I, to, into.

  • Using small whiteboards we practised writing letters with cursive formation.

  • We discussed journeys and made a mind map together to show our knowledge.
