Music Conservatory

Located at Dwight Jubilee Campus on Friern Barnet Lane for Upper School, and at Woodside Campus for Lower School, our music department is a hub of activity throughout the school day, with a variety of musical activities during lunchtimes and also after school. In addition to the practical music-making of the day-to-day curriculum, the Dwight London Music Conservatory Programme provides students with the opportunity to take individual music lessons and ensemble coaching in order to develop their musical talents, skills and knowledge. The programme offers a wide variety of musical styles by our committed team of experienced professional musicians and teachers including graduates as well as teaching staff from prestigious institutions such as The Royal College of Music, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, The Guildhall School of Music & Drama and The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and artists performing in well established leading jazz ensembles, orchestras, choirs and rock bands. The Conservatory encourages students to actively participate in musical ensembles, representing our school in concerts, at competitions and festivals as well as at the regular Dwight Global concert in Carnegie Hall, New York.

Having run the programme on weekdays alongside the regular academic schedule at Dwight, we have now decided to extend the service to Saturdays to allow for greater flexibility when it comes to scheduling music lessons alongside the often demanding academic requirements during the week. Furthermore, Dwight London Conservatory Saturdays will not only be open to all Dwight students but also to Non-Dwight families in order to promote and facilitate a greater interconnectedness and involvement within the local community.

Conservatory Saturdays are located at our Jubilee building and are open on Saturdays from 9am – 1pm. Apart from standard one to one lessons, we arrange tuition in small groups and help and facilitate specialist instruction (e.g. tuition in a rare instrument, by highly specialist music teachers and professors, etc.) upon request. We also look forward to running bands and ensembles which are free of charge for Dwight students registered for individual music lessons with our Conservatory, all other participants pay a small administration fee of £50 per term. Please refer to the registration form for further details.

The well-established format of offering music lessons during regular school hours on the basis of withdrawal from lessons will of course continue as usual. On weekdays as well as on Saturdays we currently offer instrumental tuition in piano, voice, violin, classical guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, drum kit & percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, theory and composition. Other instruments may be available upon request.

Additionally, Dwight Conservatory faculty offer specialised ensemble coaching on weekdays after school at no additional cost such as the Dwight London jazz band, the rock band, the school choir, a chamber group, a folk band and an after school music theory club. There are also several student-initiated and led bands rehearsing mostly during lunchtime.
